How to write a prompt that produces a usable form
The generator writes the questions, picks a field type for each and drafts the options. What it cannot guess is context you have not given it. A one-word prompt gets a generic form; two extra clauses get one you can almost publish.
- Say who is answering
- '…for existing customers' produces different questions from '…for prospects'. The audience changes the tone and what can be assumed.
- Say what the answers are for
- '…so we can route enquiries to the right team' tells it to ask a routing question. Without a purpose it optimises for completeness, which means length.
- Name the must-have questions
- Anything you already know you need, list it. The generator will build around it rather than approximating it.
- Give a length
- 'Keep it under six questions' is respected, and it is the single most useful constraint you can add.
- Mention the format
- 'One question at a time' or 'as a multi-step form' sets the layout, so you are not switching it afterwards.
What to check before publishing an AI draft
A generated form is a good first draft and should be read as one. Four things are worth a look every time, because they are the ones a generator gets plausibly rather than exactly right.
- The option lists
- Choices are drafted from general knowledge, not your business. Plan names, departments and product tiers usually need correcting.
- What is required
- Generated forms tend to over-require. Relax everything you can live without.
- Question order
- Easy and impersonal first, sensitive later. A generator often leads with the question you should have asked third.
- Anything asking for personal data
- If it drafted a field you do not actually need, delete it. Collecting data you have no use for is a liability, not a bonus.
